Bentworth School District Discusses Cyber Schooling for Students

By Alice Harris

The December 12, 2011 Bentworth School District meeting was held at 7 p.m. in the Bentworth School library. The meeting began with roll call and the Pledge of Allegiance. As there were no public comments, School Board President Atkinson asked for any questions of comments concerning enclosures #1-5 (i.e. November minutes, treasurer's reports, bill lists, and cafeteria and student activities reports). As there were none, these items were approved.

Superintendent Charles Baker stated that the District is required to have a working school safety plan in place. The current plan is continually updated; however, a computerized program offered by US Life Safety, Inc. of Canonsburg (http://www.uslifesafety.com/) is currently available to all schools in Washington County at no charge for the first year. Under this program, critical information is in place and accessible to approved authorities in event of emergency situations and provides a framework for another level of preparedness and security for the District. The offer for this plan as it stands was approved.

Assistant Superintendent Scott Martin stated a review of Board policy #113.2, Programs Section: 504 Chapter 15 will be addressed at the next meeting. Email any questions. Voting will be on policy only, not on regulations. He also discussed the District's cyber school enrollment, citing 42 active students are currently in four different cyber schools. The cost to educate a student is not more that $2,500 per student. However, cyber schools are receiving anywhere from $9,000 to $20,000 per student per year depending on needs.

Business Manager Deb Babirad asked approval to extend the agreement with Premier Power for electric service through July 2014 at the same or less annual rate. A contract with Driver Run G to Hope Feenan (effective December 1, 2011) was approved. Act 1 of Special Session 2006 Resolution (Enclosure 9C) to not raise millage more than 2.4% for 2012 was approved.
