Belle Vernon Borough Council members filled the vacant council seat, bringing the member total to five, at the July 9 regular meeting.
Lewis F. Stiltner IV, a Green Street resident, received a unanimous voted to serve as a councilmember, after submitting a letter of interest. In his letter, Stiltner expressed his commitment to work toward bettering his community. A father of four ranging from ages 2 to 12, he and his wife, Kandie, also own a small business in the community, Stiltner Arts & Crafts.
He will now hold the seat until the next municipal election in 2013, when he will have to run on the ballot. The seat has been vacant since the last municipal election, since no one sought the seat.
No progress has been reported on the cleanup efforts of the property at 427 Main Street. Borough Solicitor Mark Galper was working with the property owner in May to reach an agreement for the borough to tear down the dilapidated property. The matter may need to go to litigation, according to Galper. This property was one of properties council members identified earlier this year that posed a danger to the members of the community.
The next meeting of the borough council is slated for August 13 at 7 p.m. in the council chambers.
