Kathleen Miller of Hiller, PA, discovered firsthand how the community benefits from expert physicians and surgeons on the staff at Monongahela Valley Hospital. In September, Kathleen was one of the first people to have total ankle replacement surgery outside of Pittsburgh in Southwestern PA — and the first person to have this surgery at Monongahela Valley Hospital.

Monongahela Valley Hospital is sponsoring a variety of informative programs during November. Many of the events will be held in the hospital’s Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center (ECC) unless otherwise noted.
Stroke Support Group - Thursday, November 1 from 1 – 2:30 p.m., ECC. The Stroke Support Group is designed for patients and caregivers to share, learn and grow with people who can personally relate to the challenges and struggles they face on a daily basis dealing with stroke and it’s after effects. Monongahela Valley Hospital’s (MVH) Center for Children's Rehabilitation (CCR) Services recently celebrated five years of helping children in the Mon Valley.
During that time, the MVH CCR has treated hundreds of children from birth to age 21 for conditions such as apraxia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, developmental delays, Down syndrome, fine and gross motor skill delays, neuromuscular and neurological conditions, orthopedic disorders, pervasive developmental disabilities, sensory integration disorders, speech/language delays and disorders as well as swallowing disorders.

Did you make a New Year’s resolution to quit smoking and you just haven’t gotten around to kicking the habit yet, or do you want to get a jump on living a tobacco-free life in 2013? The Primary Care Resource Center (PCRC) at Monongahela Valley Hospital is offering smoking cessation classes which will be held each Thursday in October from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Each of the classes will be held in the PCRC, which is located on the fourth floor of the hospital.

Free flu shots will be available during the Neighbor to Neighbor Community Watch meetings on Wednesday, October 10 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Wednesday, November 14 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Finley Hall, just North of Finleyville off Rt. 88 across from the new church. The influenza vaccine injections are being made available through Jefferson Hills Area Ambulance Service. JHAAA nurses and paramedics will give the injections.

The Center for Health and Fitness, located in the Mon-Vale HealthPLEX, is one of only three exercise facilities in western PA to install a Power Plate machine that offers a full-body workout in less than 30 minutes using elements of fitness which include: stretch, balance, core conditioning, strength training and massage.
